@sedera12 This actually uses Cuprous Oxide, a semiconductor. Photons let the "lower" electrons pass the band gap and flow into the solution until they reach the copper, on the other end of the container.
It's a so called solar battery because it will read voltages also in the dark, but when exposed to light it produces much more energy.
If you're interested in a "real" solar cell, take a look at the TiO2-antocyanin based cell. I think I'm going to make some to power a microcontroller.
