Kids who contact each other via SMS could be better spellers according to new research.
That's according to the University of Coventry's latest findings on children between the ages of eight and 12.
What's bound to raise an eyebrow amongst gatekeepers of the English language is the claim that even abbreviated sentences or text speak can be beneficial.
Their evidence suggests that children who tap out text speak are more likely to do well in classroom-based literacy tasks.
Dr Clare Wood, head of the study, says it "appears to be a valuable form of contact with written English for many children", which lets them practise reading and spelling on a daily basis.
But following these children over the next years will determine if they can apply their text language within the real world or if it will turn out to be a hindrance.
