I know the story behind this gig. It explains it in the novel "Come as You Are" .
What had happened was that the supporting gig that went on before them was Bikini Kill. The crowd booed and hissed them, called them bitches and whores and told them to get off the stage so Nirvana could play
Kurt had seen this and was extremely offended, because he thought it was mean and sexist.
So when Nirvana came on he taunted the crowd, pretended to play teen spirit and suddenly changed songs, and acted weird

I remember me and my band in High School played this for the talent show (I was vocals and Lead Guitar) and before the show started I smoked a pack of cigarettes and drunk a bit of whiskey to give my voice the "scratch" that Cobain had, I got pretty close and I sounded awesome but my throat hurt like hell for a week.
It was worth it.
