Violon is one of six songs from the song cycle entitled Fiancailles pour rire, written by Francis Poulenc in 1939. This cabaret styled French Melodie is meant to portray a feeling of Paris in the 1930s. The setting of the poetry is a beautiful, upper-scale restaurant on the Champs-Elysees. A refined woman patron becomes enchanted with a gypsy violinist that serenades her. Sung in French, the violin and violinist are characterized in the piano accompaniment. The vocal writing employs portamenti as the character becomes more tipsy and enamoured with the violin and its player.
