What step do you make the holes and how do you machine the holes in the right spot?
-
For making the holes, do you have a different machining operation? Do you surface your stock then make the holes?
-
You will end up with a great part for sure, however you would have to charge a 100 dollars per grip in order to justify the time it would take to do it this way. For it to be profitable I have found you cant s[pend any longer than about 10 min per set

I am looking into building a small cnc mill for making grips and other randoms hobby stuff. I am completely new to the software used for this type of thing. I have found an .igs file for the 1911 grips but I have been trying to add checkering to it in turbocad. I have not been able to figure it out. Any idea's would be appreciated. Do you know where I can find a checkering pattern file?
Merry Christmas!!

These ones are birch, I have some black walnut, mahogany, and maple that I'll be making more out of. This is basically a practice run.

what were they being made out of?
How are you holding your workpiece in place?

@jbmortensen I made some expanding fasteners that are holding in the grip screw holes.

Very cool Bro! Might have to talk with you about some in aluminum...

MADJACK, I'm really considering it, it'd take a significant change in programming because this mill is so wimpy. each panel would take a long time. Any specific checkering that you'd want? PM me on the boards if interested, I need to pump out a few sets in wood before I do Al.

Its a Sieg X2 that I retrofitted to CNC.
IN my opinion, its way too small, I've done some serious work with it but its been a pain. Look at the X3 or bigger.
