Chapter 69

**FLASHBACK**
Nick drifted deeply into thought as he randomly plucked the strings of his guitar. He was finally alone at the hotel. Recently he had not had any time to himself to really reflect. One would think that with everything that was going on he would welcome the company of his brothers and friends, a constant distraction from thinking of his dad's current condition. The problem with that though is that he hadn't had the opportunity to figure out his feelings for Ashley or Linz either. In the past two weeks Nick had written several songs but he was finding the process incredibly frustrating. Whenever he would start writing a song about Linz it would turn into a song about Ashley, and vice versa. Somehow for some reason when he tried to express his feelings for one girl it would become jumbled with how he felt for the other. His current train of thought was cut off by Johanna quickly running through the door.
"Hey Nick," she calls as she runs into Kevin's room.
"Hey," Nick mutters in reply but not loud enough so she can hear. He should have expected something like this to happen. It always does or at least lately. He sets the guitar down and places his head in his hands. Johanna comes out of Kevin's room and is about to yell 'Bye Nick' as she runs out the door but ends up doing an double take.
"Are you okay?" Johanna asks as she stops and turns to face him. Nick groans into hands and mumbles something that again she can't hear. Johanna takes his response as a no so she goes over to the couch, sits down and puts her arm around him. "I want you to know I'm here if you ever need to talk. You know if you want an unbiased outsider's opinion." Johanna pauses slightly to see if he would respond. "So I don't really know if I could be unbiased seeing how Linz is one of my best friends but I would definitely try," she jokes. After a moment or two Johanna gives Nick a quick squeeze before getting up to leave.
"How do I choose?" Nick asks desperately just as she reaches the door. She turns around to see his face fraught with emotion.
"Uhh..." She averts her gaze as she tries to come up with the right thing to say. Suddenly a thought comes to her making her chuckle.
"What?" Nick asks confused.
"Oh nothing..."
"No what?"
"I was just thinking about the Friends episode when Ross is trying to choose between his girlfriend Julie and Rachel. He made a pro/con list for each girl. He was able to come up with a bunch of cons for Rachel and the only con for Julie was that she wasn't Rachel. From that he realized that he wanted to be with Rachel."
"That's perfect!" Nick exclaims jumping off the couch and runs into his room.
"Nick, wait!" Johanna shouts after him. She is about to follow him but he comes running back into the livingroom with a note pad and pencil.
"This is so great. I'm finally going to get this all figured out," Nick says to himself as he starts drawing the pro/con table.
"STOP!" Nick drops the pencil taken aback by Johanna's sudden and harsh outburst. She sighs deeply.
"You can't do that."
"But you just said..."
"You didn't let me finish," Johanna states simply, "Rachel eventually found his lists and was really upset about the things he wrote down as her cons. So basically it's a bad idea. It just made me laugh when it popped into my head." Nick slumps back on couch, his previous determination completely faded.
"So what am I supposed to do?" he asks with a defeated tone evident in his voice. Johanna took a seat beside him and contemplated his options.
"Well which girl do you see yourself with?" Nick looks over at Johanna giving her an 'are you kidding me' look. She sighs. "Fine, how about you try and imagine your life a year from now? Or better yet how about you try and imagine your life without one or the other? Which life seems better?"
"I guess I could try that.." Nick mutters.
"Good because I've got to get going. Kevin is waiting in the car for me. I just had to run back for my phone," Johanna states giving Nick a friendly hug, "Call me if you ever need anything!"
"Thanks Johanna!"
"No problem buddy," she says with a smile before heading out, leaving Nick once again to his thoughts. He laid down and closed his eyes letting his imagination run wild. Image after vivid image appeared before him. There was just one common link between each of them - Linz. He jolted upright as if he had been slapped in the face. Linz was the one he wanted to be with!

That's funny with Friends. It was a pretty good idea though.
I'm glad he finally figured out who he wants to be with. I just hope he can let Ashley down really gently. She's going to be so broken when she finds out. Poor girl.

Loved ittt?! Friends is my obsession xD That episode was just on the other day. But, it all ended well! ... Or at least not horribly! :D Great chapter. Love the Friends reference, & good advice by Johanna :) Good luck Nick... lol
