As Governor Pawlenty prepares to unallot state-issued Local Government Aid (LGA) payments to Minnesota cities and counties as part of a plan to balance the states budget, county commissioners and city councils around the state are wrestling with how best to deal with the seemingly inevitable reduced funding.
Kanabec County Commissioner Kathi Ellis, who represents Whited, Comfort, Quamba and Knife Lake townships and serves as board chair, said during a town hall meeting Tuesday that budget issues are the No. 1 issue facing the Kanabec County Board.
In this time in this county, I think the important thing for commissioners and residents to think about is how can we continue to be able to serve you, the population of Kanabec County, with reduced funding, Ellis said. Lots of the discussions weve had at the county board at the end of last year and most of this year have been related to how we can do the same kinds of services but do them more fiscally inexpensive. We havent come up with a lot of great ideas.
