Lead Acid Car battery to Alkaline rechargeable battery conversion !UPDATE! Over 1 year later...!
Here is the first battery video DIY link below
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2hotJcwXSA
I hope you enjoy the update.
I took a common dead lead acid car battery and performed a conversion to Alkaline via Alum powder.
Before the conversion this battery was ready for the junk yard and didn't hold a charge any more. After a lot of cleaning with baking soda water to neutralize the acid we did the alum powder water conversion.
After some brief testing I noticed the converted Alum Alkaline battery had good power and seemed to hold a nice charge. I will update you guys with my latest findings as soon as I do more testing. Please do not try to do this at home, acid is very dangerous and should only be attempted in a safe environment and with the proper safety equipment.. Also please check with local and state laws as to the disposal of chemicals and waste materials.
I hope you enjoy this video!
-Pete

  • ok, nice, have to try that. i have one totally dead car battery (12V, 45Amp, 6 cells) frozen off couple of times.. Let's see if i can take it back to life.

  • ok thanks mate! Lookin forward to it.

  • Hey Pete, it's Brendan :)

Do you know what kind of alum you used? It's probably Potassium Alum, that's the most common. What I'd like to see is a side-by-side comparison of amps/volts in a lead acid battery to a DIY alkaline battery. Time until the battery loses charge on a low, medium, and heavy draw would also be really cool to see.

Either way, this is a great idea for recycling dead lead/acid batteries, and I will be trying this myself in the near future.

  • This would certainly come in handy during the up & coming inevitable Zombie apocalypse.

Using what is on hand, brilliant!

  • Thanks for the update... good job on your conversion. Your Y/T video of DIY solar panel was the first I saw on Y/t and you really got my attention. You also intorduced me to Fat, sick and nearly dead. As a result I've lost 16 pounds after 3 weeks and continue to improve. How about an update on the solar panels you built? Any info on how they're holding up after a few years of use? I'm about to start my own solar panel project and am looking to gain from your experience. lay it on me!

  • did u ever read my e-mail i needed help on tha sound on my laptop that cuts in and out wen i record my voice tell me what should do......good video man!
