Ed was the inspiration for fictional murderers such as: Norman Bates(Psycho), Leatherface(The Texas chainsaw massacre), and Buffalo Bill(The Silence of the lambs), amongst others.

Ed Gein was a sick sick man, but you have to feel a little sorry for him (If only a little). He had an unbelievably shitty life, and it really is no surprise that he snapped.
