Permanent Seed Implants

Brachytherapy is the placement of radio active seeds directly within the tumor target which in this case is the prostate. It is a way of trying to reduce the risk of injury to nearby normal structures like the bladder and the rectum. By placing the seeds within the prostate we deliver a very high dose of radiation to the prostate without having to have the radiation pass through normal tissues to get there. It's an excellent way to cure patients with early stage disease with minimal impact on the quality of life. The doctors at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center have performed over 700 implants on patients with early stage disease with excellent control rates and excellent morbidity rates.
