If you're looking to adopt/rescue a dog, you should consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. Unforunately, most are killed after they are done racing. They are bred for their temperament as well as their speed, so they are quiet and gentle dogs that make perfect pets. I've had Fiama for about two years and she has been the perfect dog.
