I think most people use that because their hands are not big enough to reach the distance. I know people with large enough hands that don't go into thumb position there.

it seems to me u clearly need more practice...your bow hand seems very arched and the music itself is very boring. try to bring out more emotion.

at 01.48 you are supposed to use thumb on the string...

Very nice, but I agree with cello4ever. You have really good intonation and playing longer phrases would definitly show that off especially on the chords. Also, you play the piece very well fast, but in some places you might consider slowing down to add to the mood of the piece as well as the end of some phrases. Nice job!
