This match foreshadowed Hingis's future, she was unable to beat Graf in a major and despite all of her 'GAME PLAYING' with her medical timeouts..she only was able to dominant when Graf was out.

@juju1305 Hingis had some problem with the slice backhand and big forehand of Graf both.. A fit Seles would spank 97 Hingis on clay and could possibly beat her on hard courts depending the form of both. A fit Graf would mostly beat 97 Hingis on all surfaces except rebound ace and would beat her easily on really fast courts like Wimbledon and the U.S Open. Of course Hingis was only 16 and 1997 and shouldnt have been at her peak yet in 1997. Maybe it was too much too soon.

@ants2876 I tend to agree. On clay fit Seles could take hingis out easily (like she did in 98) their 97FO encounter was as close as can be and monica was really unfit at that point. as for Graf's game, I don't think Hingis' problem was the power, it was Graf's backhand slice that annoyed Hingis a lot because the could not generate spin and angle on it because it had a low bounce and broke Hingis rythm. It's quite obvious in some of their matches.

@juju1305 I think Hingis would have won the Australian. It is her best surface and she had alot of momentum after a great end to 96. It is Graf's worst surface and Seles had to miss the Australian with a broken finger anyway. However I dont think she would have won any other slams. Hingis isnt even a great clay or grass courter, she never came close to winning Wimbledon again and never won the French. And at the U.S Open she is good but the power game of Graf is too much for her.

@ants2876 We'll never know. 97 Hingis was as good as anyone wasn"t she. Graf was injured that year and Seles below her best, so it's hard to tell if Martina would've won 3 slams, had both been competitive. I'd give the French to a fit Seles and Wimbledon to a fit Graf. AO and USO would have been close calls.

@juju1305 honestly I look at Hingis as more of a filler or an interim #1 than anything else. Yes she had some great success in the late 90s and she earned it. Still would she have won so many 4 of the next 5 slams in 97-early 98 and dominated the way she did if Graf didnt go down hard with injuries and Seles wasnt dealing with her fathers illness and impending death and fat as a blimp. Probably not. At the end of 96 everyone expected Graf to keep dominating another 2-3 years.

@grafgirl27 I agree with that. the losses to Graf FO99 and Venus USO2000 finished her off... She had a big ego indeed. Henin had no reason to because it took her a while to get to the top and she wasn't dating half the male tour (no wonder given her looks...).

But Martina is still a great player and deserves her name among the top ones. She brought a wind a renewal that was much needed back in 97
