I played this song on the jukebox at a craphole sports bar last night. It's difficult to express in words the joy I felt watching a bunch of bar whores and dipshit wiggers in sideways monster energy drink hats recoil in horror and demand this be turned off in favor of the same garbage club music they'd been hearing all night.

If the most worthless shitbags on the planet can't stand you, you've got to be doing something right.

    Here's to ya, Tom.

My dad used to rock me to sleep listening to this. One of my fondest memories as a kid.

The last line of his obituary is "The piano has been drinking . . . not me."

Absolutely! Tom Waits is to music what Charlie Chaplin used to be to film ... leading us along thinking we're enjoying something lighthearted, and then suddenly revealing the truth and we get a punch in the gut - what we were laughing at is no longer funny, and all along it really never was but we weren't paying close enough attention.

Songs like this and Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis shows Waits' ability to make a song that's amusing while you listen to it, only to hit you hard with the depressing truth of the song in its final moments. It's a great demonstration of using emotion to drive a song as opposed to a catchy beat. Works of art, these songs are.

I don't know about that. I've been a Tom Waits fan since the mid '70s. Even then, I'd play his stuff on the jukebox in some really hardcore bars and a lot of people couldn't get into it. For many it's an acquired taste. I had friends who couldn't stand Waits, til Heart Attack & Vine came out in'79 or '80 and they heard Jersey Girl. Keep playing it and give them a chance!
