In this Magento Video Tutorial I show you how to clone a live Magento Commerce Website which can then be used in an offline/local development environment for testing, developing, and upgrading. There are 4 main steps:

1) Install and Configure a local Webserver which meets the Magento System Requirements
2) Backup the production web servers home directory & Magento MySQL Database
3) Restore the MySQL Database to the local development server
4) Restore the home directory to the local web server, clean out the Magento var/report, var/cache, and var/session directories, then load the website in your web browser. All being well the local copy should run and should be an identical clone of the live web server. You can now test, develop and upgrade the local clone as much as you like. Once you're happy that the local clone works as you want it to, you can then reverse the procedure and upload the local copy to the production site.
