This small national park lies in the middle of a huge geologic and hydrologic formation which encompasses most of Nevada. The Great Basin has more distinct mountain ranges than the rest of North America. In the Basin, water flowing does not run to the sea, but instead circulates within the Basin.
The primary feature in the park is Wheeler Peak, a 13,063-foot high peak with a tiny glacier and alpine lakes.
The Lehman Caves lie beneath the flanks of Wheeler Peak. They offer a half-mile walk through subterranean chambers filled with limestone formations in fantastic shapes.
I had the good fortune to visit during the Fall, when the leaves were beginning to turn.
