The ASPIRE project was launched in October 2006, bringing together a partnership of 12 organisations representing 10 communities across the EU. The main objective of the project has been to develop a replicable model for creating Sustainable Energy Communities in peripheral areas. This has involved the drafting and adoption of Sustainable Energy Action Plans, and wide engagement with citizens and key stakeholders through a combination of education, capacity building and community engagement activities. Through this process, ASPIRE seeks to demonstrate the key role that energy plays in the economic and social development of communities and how better integration of sustainable energy measures can contribute to overall economic sustainability, whilst also helping to mitigate against the impacts of climate change.
The short video presents some examples of the activities that have been developed through the ASPIRE project with the aim of inspiring and motivating other communities to adopt the ASPIRE approach to becoming a sustainable energy community. A tool kit will soon be available on the project website that will support communities through this process.
