Fort Myers resident Vince Hanley, 33, died Thursday August 25, 2011 after a 20-year struggle with Gorham's disease, a rare bone ailment that has been reported only 200 times in medical literature, according to the Gorham's Disease Alliance website.
Hanley was an outstanding youth athlete before contracting the disease at 12. He lived the rest of his days in a wheelchair and on a ventilator. He was friends with people such as NFL players Vinny Testaverde and Earnest Graham, and worked for about 12 years operating the scoreboard for the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium.
Vince Hanley was not only one of the greatest youth athletes in Fort Myers history, he was a loyal friend to so many all over the country. He will never be forgotten. His strength and courage were an inspiration to so many. Information will soon follow, as the process begins to start The Vince Hanley Scholarship Foundation. Rest now dear friend...we love you.
