ELLEN HINSEY reads four poems from UPDATE ON THE DESCENT (2009), a powerful meditation on violence, war and human division. Drawing on personal and family experiences as well as research at the International Criminal Tribunal in the Hague, UPDATE ON THE DESCENT is an exploration of the extremes of the human condition, tackling issues of civil strife and tyranny, reconciliation and the renewal of the spirit. Ellen Hinsey has published three books of poems: UPDATE ON THE DESCENT (Bloodaxe Books, UK; University of Notre Dame Press, USA, 2009), THE WHITE FIRE OF TIME (Wesleyan University Press, USA, 2002; Bloodaxe Books, UK, 2003), and CITIES OF MEMORY (1996), winner of the Yale Younger Poets Award. She has lived in Paris since 1987, and teaches writing and literature at Skidmore Colleges program and the French graduate school, the École Polytechnique. Pamela Robertson-Pearce filmed her in the Wordsworth Trust's Jerwood Centre at Dove Cottage, Grasmere, Cumbria, on 21 April 2009. The poems she reads in this video are 'Transcript', 'A Concise Biography of Tyranny'. 'Update on the Last Judgement' and 'Interdiction'.
