This is my late tribute to the late Michael Jackson. All the instruments are acoustic with the exception of the Fender Bass. Pardon my singing, but I hope you really enjoy. This is my favorite Jackson 5/MJ song.

Nic de la Riva - Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Fender Bass, Congas, Cajon, Tambourine, Cymbals
Nixie @ nerdberd.com - Video Editing

Obviously, I do not own this song. It's a cover.
Composed by Berry Gordy Jr./ Alphonso Mizell/Freddie Perren/Deke Richards

  • love the instrumental.. rly nice.. I was wondering.. which mic do you prefer.. your re20 or shure sm7b? anyways nice bongos? you should get into tablas they would fit your style.. this looks like it took alot of time too I appreciate it!!

    peace

  • @ the POOPOOSOLDIER!

i'm glad you like it. Thanks. the RE20 and SM7b are both great mics! I like them because they sort of mellow out the strident Hi Mids of my voice. The RE20 is a warmer sounding mic. It makes my falsettos sound creamy and dreamy. The SM7 has more presence and cut through the mix. For vocals, the SM7b is probably the more versatile one, but lately I've been preferring the RE20 for my own voice. Be sure to use a good preamp as well!

  • some places sounds off with the rythm but hey its music no 1 is PERFECT. as for the vocals ya its for higher pitch MJ was like 11 when he did this 1 lol but i like your rendition all in all :)

  • thanks buddy

yeah I'd also like to point out that I did this in the original key of the recorded song. And Motown's policy is to record songs a half step too high for the artist just to get them to sing out more. So it would've been high for anyone. And I didn't transpose it in order to preserve the bass and the backing vocals.

  • @NicMaVie

Now don't be coy Nic. You know very well that you can hit those high notes when you are singing in your upper register.

You proved that a couple of weeks ago

when you posted your version of I Can't Stay by the Killers. You showed glimpses of your various voices in

I Want You Back, but this upper voice is

really a great younger boy sound with no

vibrato. You must have been a choir boy.

BTW: You play a miked cajon inthe vids, but have you tried one with a pickup?

  • hmmmmm well I've just never had a chance to play the pickup ones. Meinl seems to use boundary mic technology rather than pickups. So why not just buy a PZM and get that room sound? In general I tend to mic everything just because I have more control over the sound. I also REALLY like the sound of my mic preamps! It's an ongoing experiment on the best way to mic cajons though. They tend to sound pretty boxy ironically. My fav cajon sound so far is Misscarolinexoxo's Bad Romance cover.
