NYC Traffic / Parking Agent Harassing Street Vendor 4-17-09 5PM 85th Street 3rd Ave.

I was looking to buy some oranges from the hard working street vendor, this is when a New York City Traffic / Parking Agent (Badge # 306) pulled up & parked his patrol car next to the fire hydrant. This agent started to tell the street vendor to move his van back behind the parking rule sign pole. The street vendor tried nicely to explain to the traffic agent that it is legal to park where he is parked now.

However, the traffic/parking agent refused to listen and insisted on the street vendor to move the van back or a summons will be issued! The agent became rude and made smart remarks about street vendor poor understanding of English.

At this point I became curious myself, so I looked around, as I looked at the signs closely, I realized the van is parked perfectly legal. I also noticed it will become illegal to park behind the parking rule sign pole (as demanded by the traffic agent badge #306), because of special on-going construction.

Being a New Yorker, I also quickly realized the traffic / parking agent is doing personal errands and wanted to park in that space himself! As I tried to speak up in support of the street vendor, the agent became rude with me, telling me he is talking to the street vendor and it was none of my business, as he walked away to take care of his personal business.

Anticipating this traffic agent (badge #306) will abuse his power and make the street vendor 'pay' for talking back to him. I quickly ran home a few blocks away and got my camera. Sure enough, about 5-10 minutes later, the traffic agent returned and started to write a parking ticket.

This is when I started to videotape this New York City traffic agent (Badge #306) trying to throw his weight around and abuse his 'mighty' powers.

Thanks for the power of YouTube! The traffic agent became scared and quickly made his move out of there! No parking ticket for the street vendor.

If you had paid attention, the traffic agent (badge #306) lied to her first, then you can see her partner quickly explained (in Russian) to her about what was really going on!

She then went after him. How come you are not saying anything about that?

The fruit vendor was wrongfully issued a ticket in violation of New York State Penal law 1.20 . On another note the van was for the most part in compliance with the white sign, however if you look at the video the van is just shy over the pole. Because of this the Traffic Agent uses this as a means to ticket the fruit vendor.

The simple fact is that NYC traffic agents have to write a ton of tickets....most are bogus summons issued falsely. Watch dog groups are out there...
