You have to see it in the Sonheim 80th birthday concert when his added years make the interpretation so much more meaningful. It isn't on Y-tube, you have to buy the dvd but WOW what a dvd!!!
Comparatively simple, but one of the most stunning moments in the original production. Dorothy as Sally, trying to understand Ben, is as haunting as McMartin in this scene.
It's a concert version, not the show, but IMO the Lincoln Center all-star version was much better sung and performed.

'71 was the best version. The cast was perfect. I recently saw the new one with Bernadette Peters and it was ok, but not as good as this one.

John McMartin was actually 40 in 1971. A bit young for the part, but the original and brilliant. He is the definitive Ben Stone.

This is the original Follies, correct? Do you have a complete video of this? And if you do, is it available for trade or sale? I'd LOVE one! :-)

Spectacular. Also unbelievable that he was on 37 at the time. Mr McMartin is still going strong, too--what a legend.
