'71 was the best version. The cast was perfect. I recently saw the new one with Bernadette Peters and it was ok, but not as good as this one.

You have to see it in the Sonheim 80th birthday concert when his added years make the interpretation so much more meaningful. It isn't on Y-tube, you have to buy the dvd but WOW what a dvd!!!

John McMartin was actually 40 in 1971. A bit young for the part, but the original and brilliant. He is the definitive Ben Stone.

Comparatively simple, but one of the most stunning moments in the original production. Dorothy as Sally, trying to understand Ben, is as haunting as McMartin in this scene.

Spectacular. Also unbelievable that he was on 37 at the time. Mr McMartin is still going strong, too--what a legend.
