backgrounds are 3d objects with textures, how is it not CGI?

Yeah, but all of the imagery that they place behind the green screen footage is CGI.

Thanks again for your response! I'm very certain in what I want to achieve with CGI and that's completely realistic exterior, exactly like in this video. Can Blender do that or I have to search for another program? PC hardware is something I can manage, however I don't know anything about software.

I've seen some pretty impressive results from Blender, especially since they gave it a new rendering engine called Cycles, but it all depends on your computer specs and graphics card. Doing very detailed realistic projects can takes hours or days to render your shots, even with a high spec computer. Check out Sintel, or Big Buck Bunny. These were short films made with Blender, and there's thousands of tutorials on YouTube to get you started.

Thank you for your response! I think I'll try Blender. Can you achieve realistic exterior like in this video?

If you're interested in CGI, then may i recommend trying out Blender? It's an open source 3D App that's free to download. It does everything from modeling, rigging, animation, UV texture mapping,physics/fluid/smoke simulations, particle effects, node based compositing, video editing, and also has a handy game engine. They update it every few months too and it's very nice for being free. I use Blender and Sony Vegas Pro for all my animations.

It's hard to tell. Lots big of film studios will write their own software (like Pixar created RenderMan for their movies). Or they might use Maya, but use MEL scripting to heavily modify it and improve it for their workflow.

What are you talking about? On most of those things you can see a GREEN SCREEN, if there's a green screen it means its been filmed in real life, not generated inside a computer
