You have to remember that such mandates as the seven deadly sins were products of the Church in a time when most were illiterate and couldn't speak Latin to understand a church sermon, and so the Church abused the system and came up with such ideas to control the populace, to take all of the people's money through indulgences and other works, and get away with things like telling a young girl who sinned that if she has sex with the priest that she will be forgiven for her sins.
