Knights of Cabaret (Heroes of the Weimar)
This week I was inspired to write this song about the
jazz swing musicians and the Berlin cabaret artist entertainers that kept their music going during the difficult times in 1930s Germany known as the Weimar Republic. The Nazi government came to power and eventually closed down the cabaret and swing music clubs. Some were defiant to the end and many were sent to the concentration camps for the love of their music and art which was banned, censored and prohibited from being played on the radio. It was a crime for even owning a jazz swing phonograph gramophone record, but there were many who resisted this and became known as the Swing youth (Swingjugend) or Swing Kids" (Swing Kinder) . I celebrate them as the heroes of the Weimar republic and the Knights of Cabaret in my song and would like the instrumental bits to be redone with the classic 1930s muted trumpet sound, but I can't play one of those, so I have just left my keyboard bit for now.
