Looking more UFO than UAV, the Japanese Defense Ministry has created a spherical surveillance drone which they have deemed the world's first. Designed for use in urban areas, the menacing, all-black machine can fly up to 37 miles-per-hour.

Weighing less than a pound, the AFP says the craft's 17-inch shell was designed to protect it from bumps against walls and windows. Lead engineer Fumiyuki Sato says the flying ball has $1400 worth of parts, all of which he pulled from store shelves.

The latest model, the seventh prototype, is equipped with a single propeller, shielded by the shell, with flaps and wings to control its flight, and can zip through the air at up to 60 kilometres (37 miles) per hour.
Sato said all its components can be found in shops in Tokyo's electronic tech-geek heaven of Akihabara, at 100-yen shops where every item sells for about a dollar, or on the Internet.

The only bummer is that craft can't be controlled using its camera. It's flight controls are still so sensitive that anyone operating the thing has to be able to see it. Still though, it's good enough to prey on the paranoia of conspiracy theorists for lulz.

@UFOHunterVlog the only ufo i have ever seen was a sphere the size of two hot air balloons, it was about 13 yrs ago in the middle of nowhere on a lake fishing with a friend in mich,no sound no lights, just very errie looking and hovering above the trees ,watched it for10-12 minutes and it went firther to the woods, wasnt shiney very dark gray and white like the moon but no craters, i wish i could see a video of someone else who has seen it or one like it!

@UFOHunterVlog yeah i didnt even have a cell phone at the time, believe me when we pulled out on to the lake looked to the left and there it was we wernt to concerned about fishing ,pretty much stood in the boat with are jaws dropped for 10 mins trying to convince the other one we were actually seeing this thing,it was the most unexpected thing and time for that to happen,after watching fire in the sky you could only imagine the thoughts going through ones mind! maybe one day soon disclosure?
