Do protests occur to actually change anything or to point out you're displeased? If you're trying to change things, you shouldn't make yourself a common enemy.
If they become afraid, they won't yield to your will -- they will eliminate you as a threat to public safety in exactly the same way as they've been eliminating small harmless cults for the past hundred years. You want to live differently? They won't let you.
Progress should be more important than standing on a soapbox.

I don't think the intent is really to be intimidating. There are plenty of things that people do, direct action or not, that can be seen as intimidating. The intimidation is only a side effect. Besides, if they feel intimidated, then I say, GOOD! Let those bastards shake in their boots and know that we won't put up with their shit.
