Do you still believe that a big booming drum, jangling tambourines and the "hare-Krishna-hare-Ramah" chant is the only kind of Krishna music? If the answer's yes, then these guys will open your eyes.
Its not only Christian popular music that boasts buff, pierced, hotties rocking out to the glory of God -- the global Krishna movement also has its own music gods who are worshiped. While still a novelty in Belarus, there is a holy trinity of Belarusian Krishna music, consisting of the Vitebsk rockers "Krypam," the Krishna reggae project "Giu Gaga" (Yah man, Krishna Rasta!) and the Krishna social rap band "Sundesh."
"Sundesh" is a Vedic (ancient Indian) dessert. If "sun" is combined with the Bengal word "desh" (which means "earth"), you get "the earth of the sun." The band is a bunch of amazing optimists who sing about the problems of all human beings, no matter which religion they follow. They sing about people's indifference to those around us, about the cradle to grave rat race of study and work, which leaves no time or space for a real spiritual life.
P.S. By the way, "Sundash" has its own stage at the "Slavic Bazaar" (the largest state-supported music festival which takes place annually in Vitebsk). Those who were there last year report that the famous Soviet era star and infamous Lukashenka supporter Alla Pugacheva, who was singing nearby on the festival's main stage, got really upset at the guys. Some say it was because they were playing too loud... others claim that the band was drawing a bigger crowd!
Hare Krishna!
