In a live webcast on Wednesday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m. (CDT), surgeons at the Neuroscience Institute at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center will perform a pediatric hemispherectomy.
A hemispherectomy is a combination of surgical removal and disconnection of one half of the brain. The surgery is performed in children who have a damaged cerebral hemisphere causing epilepsy.
In many cases, especially with children, the remaining functioning portion of the brain takes over the tasks that were previously controlled by the portion of the brain that has been removed. This often leads to increased quality of life and elimination of seizures.
its crazy. such drastic surgeries have taught us that the brain is a highly adaptable organ that can recover from significant trauma.
