TRANSCRIPT:
Victoria is one of the world's most liveable and beautiful regions.
The precious natural environment that nurtures Victoria is managed by one department -- the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
We've got a challenging job making sure Australia's most densely-populated state develops sustainably while managing natural resources in the age of climate change.
The department - better known as DSE -- is one of the Victorian Government's biggest departments.
We're "on the spot" across Victoria, operating from 90 locations and so we should be... we're responsible for the entire state's public land!
There's 2,700 of us dotted around Victoria -- from firefighters to IT experts, parks rangers to policy makers, indigenous liaison officers to scientists.
Our workplaces range from firefighting depots in remote regions to "shop front" offices offering information and services.
You can come to DSE for anything from a duck hunting licence to a firewood c collection permit.
Our officers and rangers are always out and about whether they're on duty, checking on wildlife in the bush or patrolling the coasts to protect our fish and marine mammals.
These roles are vital, especially in regional Victoria.
But sustainability isn't just delivered on the ground. DSE has a complex role which means we have to work closely with industry stakeholders like CFA, Parks Vic, Sustainability Vic etc. Together we make sure sustainability is top of mind when managing bushfires, biodiversity and ecosystems, forests, parks, water resources and catchments.
Among these stakeholders, local government, water authorities and catchment management authorities are a few of the high profile industries DSE works with every day.
There's never a dull day at DSE. With a huge breadth of operations covering Victoria's coasts, alpine regions and metropolitan Melbourne... every day's a school day!
DSE aims to strike a balance between use and conservation. Bushfire prevention is one of DSE's most important responsibilities. We manage a planned burning program that carefully preserves the best of our forests while reducing the risk of bushfire.
DSE supports recreation like 4WDing, hiking and fishing on our public land while protecting flora and fauna, especially our endangered species.
The sustainability challenge is only just beginning. Our changing climate and ever-increasing population constantly throw new challenges our way.
DSE is keen to meet these challenges head-on so we can continue to sustain Victoria's beautiful natural environment for future generations.
