今次和大家講怎樣用 present 和 past participles 簡化 defining relative clauses。

The girl who lives upstairs is very pretty ＝ The girl living upstairs

The man who was arrested last night is a murder suspect ＝ The man arrested last night

但要留意並非所有 defining relative clauses 都可以這樣簡化的，而 present participle 限制特別多。

你說得對...不過 這是passive voice

原句是 the man who is killed last night was his father.

用了past participle 不是 用 present participle.

所以可以簡化

佢企係果度,唔係尋晚既事咩.咁咪得一次,why用presen­t participle

Longman Elect 3 Book 2 所用的例子曾用present participle phrase 來描述過去的事情.

而Hamlet中有一句句子,"Sleeping in mine orchard, a serpent stung me." 雖然句子中的主語對稱及代名詞出現錯誤. 但顯然莎士比亞的確利用present participle phrase 來描述過去的事情.

莫非, 這句Walking carelessly, John was knocked by a car. 有問題?

即是, 這句 John was walking carelessly. John was knocked down by a car.

不可以寫成: John, walking carelessly, was knocked down by a car.

是否莎士比亞, 朗文教科書, 還是劉家傑都有錯?
