They did the right thing by helping. If they hadn't done that the baby could have gotten stuck, causing major problems for both the kitten AND the mother. Also, I've never heard of a house abandoning her babies because they "smell like humans". I've had 2 cats that gave birth. Both of them needed help getting kittens out and neither of them abandoned any of their babies.
