This is unique film of great Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840-1926) at work on a canvas en plein air.

I have also uploaded on my channel film footage of other great late C19 and early C20 French artists Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas and Auguste Rodin.

  • I used to laugh at artists who wore black all the time. Like it was just some kind of clique uniform. Then one day I painted outside wearing an orange t-shirt, when I returned to the studio with the painting, noticed I had over compensated the blue to counteract the orange reflection from my shirt. So wearing black or a muted color is a good idea especially when painting outside.

That being said, Monet could probably be wearing christmas lights and it wouldn't matter.

  • @waterhouse221 - never thought that clothing could change the colours you use when painting - but of course you are right - thanks for sharing that!

  • Great to see the man in action! And how did he keep so clean, or was the white suit

    because he was being filmed?

  • hi andrewpainting - i suspect it was a clean shirt for the photograph for posterity! in daily life i bet he'd have had a not-so-paint revealing blue or grey one!

  • @andrewpainting

Think you're right. Actually I think I've seen photos of him wearing a painter's smock, and smudges on it. I have a book on him in Giverny somewhere, lots of pictures , so will try find it ...

  • hi andrewpainting - i think i've seen similar photos too - the grubby version of some En plein air work!

  • @rachelhcole - i can't find a date but monet died in 1926 (of lung cancer) and from the impression of his age and the dress of the two participants in the footage it was perhaps filmed in the late 1910s or early 1920s cheers

  • This is wonderful! Do you have any idea when it was filmed?

  • hi sltinerella - yep, very nice to know it exists - i didn't till quite recently
