House Bill 1366 was introduced to the North Carolina General Assembly in 2007, since then, it has been 'revised' to take out the categories gender identity/expression from the list of students whom which the bill would protect. It is going to be heard again this session, and I generally hope that gender identity/expression is put back into the bill's protections.

We need the bill to go back to its original form to protect all North Carolina students, including those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. This video shares my story about being out in K-12 schools in NC, but sadly enough, it is not singular, and there are many other stories which we have not heard, about LGBT students who drop out of school, think about or commit suicide because they are harassed physically or verbally by their peers. They feel that the school and administration isn't going to help them or provide support for them. The passing of this bill will ensure their protections and enable them and all NC students to learn, grow and expand their minds for a better future.

If you have any questions, please either comment and I will respond, or send me a message on here.

Find out who your NC representative is, contact them, tell them to vote YES on this bill with all the protections, for all students provided. If you are a legislator, please vote YES on this bill to ensure that all NC students can have a safe place in our schools.

  • I'm a gay guy going into twelfth grade, and I'm just very glad to have such an accepting school.

My middle schools were extremely homophobic, so I can imagine what it was like for you. I'm glad you came out of it. There's nothing wrong with being sexually different!

  • Thank you SO much for sharing your video, Samantha!

  • Hey Samantha! Thanks so much for posting it. We need more people like you to step up and tell their stories. And yes, we will be fighting to make sure gender identity or expression is included in the bill again.

  • Thanks for posting this! I'm sharing it with all of my friends.
