His polkas are always great - but as I fall further behind the popular music, the less fun they seem (although Polka Face was brilliant)... and there's less substance to modern music to parody as a polka, sadly...

But then I suppose that's true of parody in general - Mel Brooks deflated the conventions surrounding musicals with The Producers, westerns with Blazing Saddles; the Zucker Brothers did the same for disaster movies (Airplane) and cop shows (Police Squad, Naked Gun). The more there is waiting the be knocked down, the better.

Oh yes, certainly didn't mean to imply there isn't still good music. But Weird Al generally takes the top of the pops for his polkas; the polka's stylistically capable of accomodating chord progressions etc more complex than a lot of modern pop tunes offer; and the simpler the song (not just in terms of chord changes, but riffs, hooks, modulations, turnarounds, an actual bridge or middle 8, etc) the less there is to work with from an arranger's point of view when you're making a parody of it.

Maybe in popular music; there's still tons of good music coming out, just not all of it hits high on any charts.

I like how all his polka medleys go through some twenty or so different melodies and tempos, but all pretty much have the same ending.
