Happy chickens. Nice video.

Damietta: I'm likewise confused (and I'm not even an UK citizen), that's why I asked Jonathan about this ban on using kitchen waste as chickenfeed. In my mind's eye, I saw the Chicken Police lurking in bushes, eager to arrest any and all who dared to feed cabbage leaves to their chickens which were not specifically bought as chickenfeed.
But I guess that it's one of those things that can be used *after* chickens have been found with serious diseases from contaminated feed.
Still, it's weird.

@Smallpotato1965 OK--color me all confused...The government in UK tells you what you can feed your own bird??
Whose brilliant idea was this?
Does it matter whether you're planning to sell the meat, eat the eggs, or just keep them as pets?
Does a constable write you a ticket for forcing innocent chickens to eat unauthorized bird food, or do they simply haul you off to jail and force the chickens to testify?

Looks like you have some pampered 'Chooks' well done.....keep up the good fight.
Chris............
Do you plan on eating the chickens or are you just using them for their eggs?

@dreckken These ones are kept just for eggs. We are thinking of getting some turkeys and sheep for meat but haven't finally decided on that.

Hey, what's that white stuff? None over here. Anyway, thanks for all the videos, they are very informative and enjoyable. I wish you, and yours, a Very Happy Christmas and hope it is all you wish it to be.
Best Wishes, Brendan.

@baconsoda Hello Brendan. We filmed this on Sunday. Fortunately the snow is now gone! Instead, it is rather wet over here and I'm squelching about in mud. Have a great Christmas. Jonathan

Weird, that ban.. If you were to buy a cabbage it would be allowed (since I doubt you grew the oats yourself), but if you were to buy a cabbage, use half of it for your supper and feed the other half to the chickens, it would count as 'kitchen waste'?

@Smallpotato1965 It's a very irritating rule that was introduced with the best of intentions. The aim is to avoid feeding animal waste to hens and therefore avoid all the disease complications. Kitchen waste can be contaminated with meat food waste. Personally, I think it is an over reaction that gets in the way of reusing kitchen waste in a productive way. It simply adds to our mountain of waste. Good intentions but questionable outcomes.
