I would disagree with you Blackdice572. This trend of "coming up with new Bunkai's is a recent trend. In the Dojos where traditional Shotokan is preserved, same old Bunkai's are still being taught. It's Bunkai's that Funakoshi taught his students and they conveyed it to next generations. Take a look at video " Bunkai do Heian Nidan" here on youtube. That's the "official" JKA Bunkai that's still being taught in Dojos preserving traditional Shotokan.
I do like the bunkai to the kata. however the kata does need a bit of cleaning up,eg, stances must be rooted, hip rotation & vibration included & sorry to say extra swinging hand moves in. Sorry to pick but the trained eye will pick those little bis up, nice bunkai though.oss
I don't know Blackdice, I disagree. The applications I see here are very similar to the ones that I practice in Shorin-Ryu. I also notice that often the bunkai of several apparently different kata are actually very similar as well. This leads me to belive that the number of reponses is alot smaller than many think, because the number of likely attacks is relatively small as well. This may explain why many older masters practiced few kata.
I dont think that any one club has ever shown the applications as the same. There are always differances, makes you wonder if the applications are even simmilar to what they were when the pinan forms were invented.
adding to that, doing a kata four different ways. such as: forwards, reverse, backwards, and backward reverse. truly knowing the form.

I fully agree to the comments on the Kata. THE TRAINED EYE WILL PICK UP THOSE LITTLE BITS.
