Lisa Saffer
Nicholas McGegan

So shall the lute and harp awake,
And sprightly voice sweet descant run,
Seraphic melody to make,
In the pure strains of Jesse's son.

  • Modern pitch varies between A 438-445

Early instrumental groups are tuned about a half stop below modern pitch. Handel and Mozarts tuning forks were A-415. This video is in modern A.

  • It is written in B flat. McGegan, like most period instrument conductors, leads an orchestra that tunes their instruments down a half tone to reflect what was probably 18th century pitch. Our current "A" vibrates at 440 Hz , Handel's was at 415 Hz. Thus, Handel's B Flat sounds like our modern "A."

  • this is in A major, the original key is B flat

  • Oh, and another thing, Victoria de los Angeles sings it slighly higher, but not quite a half tone. Hers was probably done in Europe and apparently the pitch there varies by a small fraction of a tone;which way (up or down) I'm not sure. But if you're in North America, this is right on key (B flat).

  • THIS is in B flat! (just like the score, plus) Checked it with the piano,

  • What key is this in? I'm pretty sure it's lower than the original. Sounds great, though!
