Indyk Opening Remarks

The U.S. already tolerates nuclear weapons from many countries, including Russia, China, North Korea, and Pakistan. Pakistan, in particular, has sold this technology to our enemies and has terrorists on their soil. So why is Iran worse? Iran has always exercised great restrained in the use of military power. If were concerned with Israels safety, we can extend our nuclear umbrella to their country and build up their missile defenses. We should make every effort to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons because this would pose a threat to our national security and that of our allies in the region. But there are ways to deal with this that fall short of military action.
