The main event put on a Grand Final to remember, rivalling the Grand Finals of the 80's in the Winfield Cup. It saw the two top teams pitted against each other to see who would take home the trophy as the best in Ulladulla for 08/09 Summer Competition.

The First half saw South Pacific get off to a flyer putting on all the pressure and making Bawley Stoners defend there line for repeat sets. All this pressure finally allowed South Pacific to put the ball over the line with Mitch Gough running one in down the right flank. The score remained 1-0 for 10 minutes or so until Paul Salafia scored for South Pacific allowing the to half a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes. It was long after South Pacific had scored their second that the Stoners were able to get across for their first try of the match with Clinton Handebo crossing after the ball went through the hands. The final 8 minutes of the first half saw a flood of tries with Mick Finch, and another one for Mitch Gough crossing for South Pacific while Ed Laws, Beau Laws and two for AJ Hatch got the Stoners a 5-4 lead at the break.

Ben Neely for the Stoners and Mick Salafia for South Pacific got the scoreboard ticking over of the half. With the game going down to the wire with only one try in it, the last 15 minutes saw tries by Mick Finch, Dylan Smith and Mark Robinson allowed South Pacific to take the lead, though the young guns of the Stoners use their speed to get around a tiring South Pacific with Man of the Match AJ Hatch putting a kick through and getting over the line. The turning point of the game came in the last 3 minutes when Nicola Tucker scored for the Stoners allowing them to win by one try as time ran out for South Pacific.

Both teams deserved to win, but unfortunately there had to be a loser.

Congratulations to the 2008/2009 Champions - THE BAWLEY STONERS

  • I thought you couldn't score from Dummy Half if you were 5 metres or less from the try line. I must be wrong.
