After 2 cracked ribs, bruises galore and a generous serving of road rash.. this assailant should have stayed home that day! LMAO!!

btw..
Of course its staged! These are scenes from the film Hell on Wheels, starring Master J., produced by the University of Miami South Florida Film Department for broadcast on local cable PBS.
The film revolves around several days in the life of a disabled Martial Artist (that would be me), with emphasis on the trials and tribulations that those of us who are disabled face each and every day.
In this scene, one of my co-stars Mr. Dave Turner who played the part of a bad guy purse snatcher, wanted to really get into the role and let me know that I should not hold back too much and give him a realistic feel of what true self-defense is all about.
Well, that was a mistake because it can be very difficult sometimes to measure ones own strength and the dynamics of certain techniques and I probably used too much force in my execution.
During the first segment of this scene Dave came running out of the corridor holding the purse and right towards me, the idea being that I was supposed to block him and execute a take-down. Well, for anyone who uses a wheelchair or anyone who has ever run into one, trying to do something like that gently is virtually impossible, the laws of gravity, motion and force will always prevail!
The first time we filmed Dave came at me faster than he estimated and while my deflection / takedown was exceptional, poor Dave nearly face-panted on the pavement and ended up scraping his hands, forearms and knees pretty bad..
It took all of 4 more attempts to get the sense of realism we wanted without shredding himself up too much more on the pavement.
With that experience, Dave decided to wear a sweater in the hopes that his arms wouldnt get tore up any further!
During the first attempt at filming the next segment (the fight scene) I nailed Mr. Turner so hard with the punch sequence that I did in fact crack 2 of his ribs.. Oh yes, that certainly hurt and we had to stop filming for over one hour so he could catch his breath and recover.
Nevertheless, he was thrilled with the realism and wanted to continue going at it, so we all decided it would be better if he wore a bullet-resistant vest in an effort to minimize the damage I was inflicting upon him (you can actually see the bulk of the vest under his sweater in one of the shots).
In the subsequent takedown scene where I place him in that treacherous armbar (one of my favorite techniques!), the first time we filmed I nearly severed his elbow joint, so again we had to stop for about an hour.
We practiced this scene some more, gently, until we found the right balance of force and realism without tearing his arm to pieces. In the final take our execution was perfect, the scene looked so real and totally devastating!
In the end, Mr. Turner went home, with quite a few lacerations, bruises, concrete rashes and 2 cracked ribs, yet extremely happy and very satisfied with the whole production!
Thanks Dave for taking my beat-down like a real trooper!
