perished yes, but he threw himself into the river to protest at corruption
so the story goes
people then started to commemorate this by drumming to keep the fish from eating his remains
and that morphed into a festival of dragonboating

From 2:00 on it was awesome, everything before that I skipped.

The Dragon Boat Festival is always so much fun! My favourite part last year was watching a last place team put so much effort into what they were doing in spite of everyone else having passed the finish line. That team might have received the biggest cheer from the crowd!! :-)
