Plans for the new Carnegie Pavilion at Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground have moved a step closer to fruition, with news that Leeds City Council has granted planning permission for the project.

The building is the brainchild of architect Will Alsop, famed for his avant-garde, modernist buildings. He cites Le Corbusier, Sir John Soane, Mies van der Rohe and John Vanbrugh as his architectural heroes. His approach to architecture was expressed in an interview with The Observer in 2007 when he said: "I like people. I hope it shows."

Work on the pioneering design - a crystalline structure topped with a green, undulating roof - is scheduled to begin this November.

The scheme combines new world-class cricket, media and hospitality facilities and will also act as a teaching space for
Leeds Met.

During the summer period, the 4,000 sqm building is intended to operate mainly as a cricket pavilion and media centre, whilst during the academic year, the pavilion will allow students access to modern media facilities, sporting, hospitality and event management experiences.

Stephen Willis, Director of Finance and Resources at Leeds Met said: "Today's announcement of planning approval for the Carnegie Pavilion marks another exciting and significant development for Leeds Metropolitan University, students, Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the city of Leeds and Yorkshire as a whole. Headingley Carnegie Stadium is one of Yorkshire's best known and loved landmarks, hosting a number of fantastic events including international cricket.

"The new development will facilitate significant and essential enhancements to the stadium. It will also provide opportunities for Leeds Met students to study in a state of the art environment and learn through unrivalled practical experiences at the many events held at the stadium."

Stewart Regan, Chief Executive of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, added: "This is fantastic news for the club, its members, players and partners. Leeds Met and ourselves have worked incredibly hard with our advisors over the past 18 months to deliver a project which satisfies everyone's needs.

"We are delighted with the outcome and look forward to commencing work on the Carnegie Pavilion later this year. This development will go a long way towards helping the club retain international cricket here in Yorkshire. We are indebted to
Leeds Met, Leeds City Council and Yorkshire Forward for their assistance, support and hard work over many months.

"The Carnegie Pavilion, when completed, will become the single most-viewed building in Yorkshire, seen by all of 500 million people on TV during international cricket events. We are confident it will become a landmark building for the city of Leeds."

Shaun Russell, of SMC Alsop, said: "The Carnegie Pavilion has undoubtedly been a real challenge for our joint clients and the whole design team - an unusual dual-use building on a highly constrained site and surrounded by residential properties - and we are extremely pleased with the outcome of the planning application. We consider the Carnegie Pavilion to be a genuinely ground-breaking project and we want to see it built."
