On This Day (Personent Hodie)
This is an ancient Latin hymn; but it may have its origins in a much earlier Greek or Hebrew hymn.
The Latin lyrics are at least 1000 years old, and the tune is an 11th-century German dance tune.
Our English translation is from the early 1800s.
Of the six songs we learned this year, this one is the simplest to perform. We changed and simplified our arrangement over a period of several weeks to arrive at the very sparse accompaniment you hear now. We like to think it might be similar to the way it sounded all those centuries ago...
