I hope that we as a country have more optimism than what is displayed in these comments. We face a 15 trillion dollar debt, eight percent unemployment, and federally-mandated, socialized medicine which will take over 1/6 of the entire economy starting in 2014. We need all the optimism we have to overcome these challenges.

They're not talking about AMERICAN exceptionalism, they're talking about WHITE execptionalism!
Replace "American" with "White" and you'll get why President Obama - who is a standard-issue, big business, corporatist who has continued disasterous Bush conservatism - is suddenly "not furthering American exceptionalism".
President Obama is continuing the destructive DC conservative/politics, but he's not 100% White! THAT is what the dittohead, moonbase wingnuts have a problem with!

Oh GAG. The one thing that made us "exceptional" was the idea of a melting pot. But even that is tainted by the treatment of indigenous peoples. What we have now is a shut the damn door, mine, mine, mine, corporate run, stressed out, disparate, mass consumption damn the consequences culture. Welcome to ROME
