Judo Gene Lebell was part of the "Wild Wild West" stock company. Every week he'd be in a different costume, fighting Robert Conrad in one brawl after another. Conrad was a regular at the Friday night boxing matches at the Olympic Auditorium, where Gene's mother, Eileen Eaton, promoted the fights. Gene reffed the Wednesday night wrestling matches, conducted the "locker room laments" interviews, and put on tights and a mask, wrestling as The Hangman when they needed him. Call RICHMOND 9-5171.

I had no idea until now Lebell was an actor.

When you consider that Piper is one of Lebell's black belts, the whole scene becomes ridiculous to anyone familiar with the martial arts. I love Burt Reynolds, but this was too much.

Ah but you have to consider that this isn't Burt against Roddy and Gene, it's Logan McQueen against Eddie and Randy. It can be difficult to separate an actor from the character he portrays but in a case like this it's essential.
Then again, Burt Reynolds is the embodiment of machismo. I imagine the strongest of men get a little weak in the knees when facing off against him.
