A very quick (and necessarily incomplete) overview over 5000+ years of history of the Netherlands, intended for an international audience. It has a slightly geographical bias due to the audience the film was originally made for.

If you think some things are missing or presented unbalanced: please post a film that discusses that part of Dutch history in greater detail. I left out a lot of important things, because the goal was a quick and dirty introduction. Further information is to be found elsewhere on the internet.

Music:
Intro: Wilhelmus (Dutch National Anthem)
Hunebedden: Volk van Laaf - Efteling (Bakery theme)
Romans: Hyrule Field Theme - Koji Kondo (Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess)
Golden Age: Theme from Soldier of Orange (Soldaat van Oranje) - Rogier van Otterloo
French Rule/19th Century: Ne me quitte pas - Jacques Brel
WW2: Theme from Schindler's List - Itzhak Perlman
20th Century: -Zing, Vecht, Huil, Bid, Lach, Werk en Bewonder - Ramses Shaffy

Made originally for the exchange Youth & Landscape 2008 in Ellivuori Finland, thanks to Lanschapsbeheer Nederland (Geschiedenis van Nederland)

  • Consider this just me being curious, but why did you use in the part you tell about the Hunebed builders music from the Efteling and het Volk van Laaf?

  • @Klokhuisjes It's just my (weird) sense of association. When I thought about music for the Hunebed builders, I immediately thought about this tune, don't ask me why =) I hope you like it nevertheless.

  • @TheSatanicEmperor to start with ,leo 1 was german who married the oldest dauther of the english king , he would have become "king" of great britain but then she died when giving birth to their child, then we where going to become indepentenden and all the big nations then (prussia, russia, great britainn france) said it was okay and great britain was sending leopold the first yo us to prevent that france would deliver the king .

so what did u say ? it wasnt legit? think again

  • what's the song called at 4:00??

  • @fej426 They claim that it was a king wile it actually was a puffed up frenchmen. Doesn't seem legit to me.

  • @TheSatanicEmperor why did belgium have a king on the 21 first of july 1831? i don't think occupied countries dont have kings or presidents of their own

  • @fej426 It is a matter of prespective

  • this guy doesnt know belgium was independent at 1830 , only holland didnt want to face this fact till 1839

  • @Leviwosc Wat erger je er zo aan

  • Nou ik ben echt heel erg trots hahaha :3

  • @Frenchkisssss Sorry, Spinoza was born in Amsterdam, only his parents came from Portugal. Of course, you are right, Descartes is from France, but he lived and worked a long time in the Netherlands.

I chose these people not because of where they were born (as you can see) but because they show what was possible in the Netherlands at the time, given the relative freedom of religion and speech and a healthy academic climate. Napoleon I have no strong opinions about. Cheers :)

  • @Frenchkisssss

One would think Napoleon's brother Louis was part of our history since he was the official King of the United Netherlands back in the days, being a puppet of his brother, he was alot better for the people than his older brother in every way.

After Louis' reign the United Netherlands came into Napoleons hands for a couple more years making us part of the French Empire of old, and you claim Napoleon has no part in our history?

It's just as much our history as it is yours.
