Jedi and I have been working really hard at his backend awareness and it has all of a sudden clicked! He has improved out of sight!

@NormyPie The phone book one is usually what I start with. I sometimes use a few other back end exercises but this is my mainstay. Once they understand their rear, I start doing lots of ground work exercises like in this video. It has worked for 3 out of the 3 dogs I've used it with so far!
