  • If anyone wants a translation for the French parts click on "Interactive Transcript" under the video. I added an English translation to follow for both part 1 and 2

  • You're referring to Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon.

This clip is of Henry V and Catherine of Valois, which happened a few decades before Henry VIII was even born

  • keep in mind too women of the dark ages werent allowed to go to school, and men who did where taught by Roman historical doctrinations, so they were told that elephant only fear is dragons, (thats true by the way)even those women of nobility that could attend classes, however only selected courses.Taking this into account Im not so sure that much thought is really put in by most people at that time, women were unfortunatly condition to cater to men at birth, that was their sole purpous, sad but tru

  • This scene wasn't meant to be historically accurate, rather it was for comical relief. Henry spoke French fluently, thus had no problems communicating with Catherine, but it's true that Catherine didn't speak English at the time. Noble women did have access to education, such as languages, literature, and such, but just like nowadays a lot of them weren't as smart or as interested in academics. Elizabeth I, for instance, was highly educated since childhood well into adulthood

  • Emma is amazing! She actually seems to be

groping for the proper English word. This

whole scene is a perfect example of Shakespeare's ability to 'defend the

    indefensible.' "Well I've just killed

most of your relatives, deposed Dad, now

how about a little smooch?" The real

    Katherine must have desperately wanted

to plant her foot in his codpiece.

  • There's an interesting article about the real Katerine online and she did indeed dislike Henry before she met him, and unlike in the movie, she never bothered to learn English until she met and fell in love with him, prior to that she hated the English immensely. Though, he actually spoke fluent French so they didn't have any problems with communication like in the film

  • Kenneth Branagh proposed to Emma during the filming of Henry V (at least that's what I read...if it's true, that's so perfect!). :)

  • I had always liked this movie and it's one of my favorites of Shakespeare's plays - after doing some separate geneaology research recently I found (almost by accident) that Princess Catherine is actually my 18th great grandmother - go figure...

  • nice

  • Re: the poster who opined that women in the "dark ages" were not allowed to study. Crass stupidity. First of all, the 15th century isn't the "dark ages", it's the high Middle Ages--the "dark ages" properly applies to a period before the 11th century, and furthermore is a pretty dubious historical notion after about 800 AD. Second, noblewomen were commonly highly educated, as well nuns. Education permeated well into the upper middle classes--witness Margary Kemp. Haven't the space to go on..

  • I love the bit, I cannot tell. Well can any of your neighbours tell Kate I'll ask them. Lol

  • @skymunro This wasn't the "Dark Ages," though. The 15th century was in the latter Middle Ages.

  • When I was watching this, I didn't even realize that Catherine was Emma Thompson. Holy God, she is an amazing actress. They're both amazing in this scene--the whole movie was amazing, in fact. (I guess it also helps that Henry V is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays... that, and King Lear.)

  • Well my cousin is currently playing the lead in Henry VI. I descend from Catherine via the Owen Tudor line. Lots of family here, but a long time back. The last European of my fathers family was Alexander Grant who fought with Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden. Elizabeth II is my 9th cousin and the Duke of Wellington my 5th. Hey, Elvis is my 10th cousin.

  • @progressiverebel Catherine's Tudor grandchild (Henry VII) ruled England. Her child who ruled England was her son by the Henry in this clip--that is, Henry VI who sadly inherited his French grandfather's mental instability.
