An easy walkthrough on how to relace a broken or bent power aerial.
Please note this method only applies to an aerial who's cable has not broken. If that is your problem then you'll need to remove the boot lining & motor assembly etc... (look for other vids that deal with that)
Please be aware that I am not a trained mechanic & and can not be held liable for any damage incurred by following these instructions.
Please note Aerials can go down as well as up.

  • Ok - I've got to ask. How many attempts did it take you guys to actually thread the cord into the motor? I kid you not I managed to get it after three goes but decided to take it out and try again as the aerial had't fully retracted. Since then I must have made a 100 plus attempts and simply cannot get it to 'bite' and pull through. Any tips?

  • @freebie62

In all honesty it took about 3 or 4 goes - I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble & can't offer any further words of wisdom other than to keep trying! Maybe try the helpful people at either uksaabs or saabscene?

Best of luck & I hope you eventually succeed.

  • i know this will sound stupid, but when the old cable is drawn back down, where does it go, where is it ejected? at first i thought it was pulled out, but it looks like it is drawn back into the bodywork. Cheers.

  • @crushkin

It's an optical illusion - similar to the way in which car wheels or airplane propellers appear to be going backwards at certain speeds. The cable is in fact being ejected out of the bodywork, but I do agree with you in that it does appear to be snaking back in...

  • the garage door took mine off

  • @MarshfieldTVuk Thanks for the reply. In the end I had to dismantle the assembly anyway as the sleeve was stuck in the main tube and the only way to get it out was to push the old aerial back the other way an gently tap it to get it out. So as it was in bits anyway, I took the opportunity to thread the cable onto the gears whilst it was disassembled and then pop the new aerial through the bodywork. Longwinded but worked. Great vid by the way - hopefully it'll be easier for everyone else ;-)

  • I just replace in my Saab 900, thanks for this walktrough :)

  • @TheOneBlackSheep1973

Glad you've sorted it - I hope your knuckles weren't included in that skinning; that's what normally happens to me...

  • @TheOneBlackSheep1973 Doesnt matter now i skinned the f**ker , bit of a potch but i got there , thanks anyway for the video .

  • @MarshfieldTVuk Can you please help . everything was going fine up until "ease out lower section from car body". At this point the snapped bit within the body just wont budge i've tried easing , coaxing and brute force but nothing seems to work , do you know what is holding it in as i really dont know , if you have any advice i'd be most grateful .

  • @TheOneBlackSheep1973 Oh and i dont know about reversing into bushes but never be impatient at the petrol station and fill up off the pump on the wrong side .

  • I'm waiting for my replacement aeriel (saab 9 3 also) to come back and thought i'd try and search for some advice , i hope it goes as quickly and easily as you made it look .
